"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Eye of the Dolphin | 2007 | PG-13 | - 2.1.2

A 14-year-old (Carly Schroeder) whose mother has recently died is having a hard time and she ends up getting expelled from school when she's caught smoking marijuana. Her grandmother (Katharine Ross) then takes her to the Bahamas to meet, for the first time, her father, a scientist who's doing dolphin research. Also with Adrian Dunbar, Christine Adams, George Harris and Jane Lynch. Directed by Michael Sellers. [1:40]

SEX/NUDITY 2 - A teen gives a condom to her grandmother, who is apparently going on a date.
We see a man and a woman in bed together, sleeping -- he's bare-chested and she has her hand on his chest. A man and his girlfriend playfully touch each other's bottom. A man and a woman kiss a couple of times.
We see a couple of women in bikinis, including a teen, and we see women in shorts and tops that reveal their midriffs. We see a bare-chested man and a bare-chested teenager in swim trunks several times. A man loses his trunks while swimming (we don't see anything; his daughter calls him a "naked moron").
A teen tells her dad, referring to procreation, "It's called sex, daddy."

VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A tiny crab scratches a teen's ear (we see a small, slightly bloody spot).
A teen almost drowns when she is pulled into the sea by dolphins (we see her flailing briefly and she is rescued).
A man warns tourists who are swimming with dolphins that they are "shark dolphins," in an attempt to make them leave. A man tells a teen that dolphins can become aggressive and bite humans when they become too attached to them. We learn that a teen's mother died due to a boating accident.
During a dream sequence we see a woman who seems to be slowly and calmly sinking into the sea. Two men are looking for a teen at night and find her passed out on the beach (she was apparently drinking vodka).

LANGUAGE 2 - 2 scatological terms, 5 mild obscenities, some name calling (jerk, moron, foolish), 2 mild exclamations, a boat is named "Hanky Panky."

SUBSTANCE USE - A 14-year-old smokes marijuana in her high school bathroom, she's discovered and suspended. A 14-year-old drinks vodka from a bottle and she apparently passes out, people are shown drinking beer and other drinks during an outdoor event, one man seems drunk, and a teen suggests ordering Mai Tais. A 14-year-old smokes cigarettes.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Dolphins, profit vs. respect for wildlife, tourism, development, death of a parent, scientific research, alternative forms of communication, teen rebellion, family secrets, suicide.

MESSAGE - Dolphins are at least as smart as human beings. A sense of purpose can mend a broken heart.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
