Dudley Do-Right | 1999 | PG | - 1.4.2

When dedicated but rather ineffective Canadian mountie Dudley Do-Right is fired because of evil Snidely Whiplash, he becomes a masked hero dedicated to saving his border-town from the villain's dastardly deeds. With Brendan Fraser, Alfred Molina, Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert Prosky, Jack Kehler, Don Yesso, Brant Von Hoffman, Jed Rees, Eric Idle and Alex Rocco. [1:15]

SEX/NUDITY 1 - There are three kisses: two boys kiss a girl on the cheek, and a man kisses a horse on the nose. Men dance in Native American costumes with exposed chests and flashes of buttocks.

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man shoots a gang hangout with an automatic weapon, and blows up a helicopter. A man is tied to a tree stump which is approaching a spinning blade (it turns out to be cardboard) and a man is tied to train tracks as a train approaches. There's a war-like assault (with tanks, guns and other weapons) on a group of people who are armed with fireworks and rocks. Fireworks are launched at the mob, rocks are thrown and boulders are rolled toward them. The people are fired upon with guns and a tank fires repeatedly at a man on horseback. The man and horse fall, but are unharmed. Two tanks fire at each other and explode. The occupants are seen blackened and tattered but unharmed. A mineshaft collapses on a man: he emerges rumpled and dirty. Also dynamite explodes and leaves a man blackened and smoky. Cars crash through customs booths with lots of breaking glass and sparks flying. Scenes of cartoonish violence consist of a man being walloped on the head by floorboards repeatedly, a boy and a man falling down and being pounded by a flag repeatedly, a man falling through a window, a moosehead falling on a man's head, a man being thrown to the floor several times and a man being whacked with a board and baseballs on the legs, head and crotch. A man's hat catches fire while he's wearing it. There's a running gag of a horse who blows raspberries and passes gas. There are several scenes of threatening with guns, and during a bank robbery a gang of masked men holds the teller at gunpoint. A man jumps over a huge gulf with his motorcycle and during a motorcycle chase men fall off and run into trees. A man chokes another man and a man talks about having killed another man. A drunken man gets sick and a bird defecates on a man's head.

LANGUAGE 2 - One mild form of the F-word, one scatological term, a few mild profanities and several insults.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Greed, jealousy, trust, friendship, right vs. wrong and good vs. evil.

MESSAGE - Good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people.

(Note: It is preceded by a cartoon short rated by the MPAA as G and titled "The Fox, the Box and the Lox." It is about a greedy fox who takes advantage of everybody he meets, and eventually gets his comeuppance. It contains one scene where a woman removes her dress behind a bush, and a couple of scenes of mild cartoonish violence: A man hits his head on a sign over and over and over again, a man hits his head on a bucket and runs into a door and a fox is trapped in a treasure chest. There's no profanity. The message is that taking advantage of people will leave you friendless and helpless. Greed is the major theme.)

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
