"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Dogma | 1999 | R | - 5.8.10

Raunchy religious satire about two fallen angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) who think they have found a loophole that will let them back into heaven. Also with Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, George Carlin, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee and Bud Cort. Alanis Morissette shows up as God. [2:05]

SEX/NUDITY 5 - Lots of sexual innuendo and rough sex talk about different types of intercourse and masturbation; also a few references to oral sex and erections. In an extended scene an angel drops his pants to reveal that he has no genitals; the camera lingers on his naked crotch. After she falls in water a woman's nipples are evident through her wet blouse, and we see pictures on a wall of topless women. Some cleavage and a woman in a small bra and panties dances suggestively around a pole. We see a man's bare behind.

VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Two angels loose their wings in a gory manner: One shows up with bloody stumps where his wings used to be; the other has his wings shot off with an automatic gun, in an extended scene: we see them being cut to shreds and eventually he also has bloody stumps. A man is attacked and beaten with hockey sticks (we see the assailants crouching over him). A woman is stabbed and killed with a hockey stick (we briefly see the bloody wound). Another woman is hit in the head with a hockey stick. There's a scene of a massacre, with many bloody bodies strewn in the street. We see a headless body and an angel's head explodes. An angels shoots several men (mostly off screen, but we see their blood spurting on a woman) and shoots another man in a bus (off screen). A demon shoots a man with an automatic weapon: we see the bullets hit him, while his body is jerking and we see the bloody bullet holes. An angel twists and breaks a man's neck. An angel stabs and kills another angel. There are a few fist fights and two men are thrown off a moving train. An angel threatens a woman by putting a broken bottle to her throat. A demon made entirely of excrement comes out of a toilet, threatens a group of people and heaves fecal matter at them. A few men attack him and we later see them lying on the floor. A man hits another demon with a golf club and black goo oozes out.

LANGUAGE 10 - Close to 100 F-words, many scatological terms, several anatomical terms and many insults.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Religion, Catholicism, church laws, the true nature of God, of angels, of prophets, etc., martyrdom, smoking (cigarettes and marihuana), abortion clinics.

MESSAGE - God exists; however, God and the others creatures of heaven (and hell) are much more earthly than we think.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
