"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion | 2001 | PG-13 | - 3.3.3

Woody Allen stars as a top insurance investigator in New York in 1940. He also seems to be irresistible to women, except for his new boss, efficiency expert Helen Hunt. The two spar and bicker until a professional mesmerist (David Ogden Stiers) puts them under his spell, tells them they love each other deeply, and makes Allen commit jewel heists that he later has to investigate, totally unaware he was the culprit. Also with Dan Aykroyd, Elizabeth Berkley, Brian Markinson, John Schuck, Wallace Shawn, Charlize Theron, Greg Stebner. [1:50]

SEX/NUDITY 3 - A woman takes off her coat in front of a man exposing her bare shoulders; she is apparently nude judging from the man's reaction. We see a nude woman (covered by a sheet to the shoulders) in bed waiting for a man. A woman unbuttons a man's shirt as she kisses him, a man and woman kiss romantically several times, and a woman kisses a man to deposit a key in his mouth. A man and woman look at each other longingly and the woman remarks about wanting to make love. There are discussions of a man having gotten drunk and being with a woman. A woman talks about wanting to be in a man's arms. We see women in tight-fitting sweaters, skirts and pants in several scenes (they're in 1940's garb). A man flirts with, and makes suggestive comments, to several women. A group of men admire a woman as she walks away and remark about her body. There is a reference to pederasty in connection with the clergy.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man threatens a woman and a man with a gun. A woman attempts to climb out her window (presumably to jump) and a man grabs her and they land on the floor. A man verbally threatens a woman several times and a woman abuses a man verbally and makes comments about ways in which he might die (choking on food, having a massive coronary, etc.). A woman yells at a man after he is caught rifling through her desk. A man is handcuffed to a pipe. A woman is grabbed around the waist by a policeman and she struggles and smacks him. A man stumbles into a large dragon mask and makes a big racket. There is a discussion of a woman living the fast life and being reckless. A woman passes out on her couch after drinking too much alcohol.

LANGUAGE 3 - 3 mild obscenities, 12 sexual references, 6 religious exclamations, derogatory references to women (terms used in the 1940s), name-calling.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Efficiency experts, ethics, hopes, dreams, men feeling threatened by strong women, infidelity, magic, hypnosis, love, fraud, passion, cheating, grand larceny, conspiracy, opium, spying, jewel thieves, private detectives.

MESSAGE - Progress is good. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Even the most disparate of people can find love.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
