"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Cotton Mary | 1999 | R | - 6.2.1

Set in India in 1954, Greta Scacchi is an Englishwoman who can't nurse her newborn baby, and Madhur Jaffrey is an Anglo-Indian nurse who helps her, moves into her home and then begins trying to control and also adapt to her lifestyle. Also with James Wilby, Sakina Jaffrey, Prayag Raj, Laura Lumley and Neena Gupta. [2:05]

SEX/NUDITY 6 - A little mild sexual innuendo, a couple of chaste kisses, and one passionate kiss (it's implied that the two have further relations, but we don't see anything). A man wearing boxers and a woman wearing a slip kiss passionately after she touches his clothed crotch; they move to a bed where she sits on top of him, he pulls down the top of her slip and kisses her bare breast, and then he pushes her off and gets up from the bed. The woman doesn't pull up her top, leaving her bare breasts clearly visible for awhile; she answers the door topless and talks and dances in front of the woman who's at the door. About five scenes during which a woman is breastfeeding a baby (twice we see a woman's bare breast, and in the other scenes we see either partial views of a bare breast or lots of cleavage); in one scene nurses are squeezing a woman's bare breasts (which are mostly visible) in an attempt to produce milk from them. We briefly see a naked newborn girl, a man talking to a woman while wearing a towel around his waist, and a few women in cleavage-revealing tops.

VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A woman grabs another's arm, a woman shoves another, a woman lightly pushes another and grabs a folder out of her hands, a woman appears to slap a woman's crippled legs, a girl pulls another's hair, and a woman holds a presumably smelly animal's tongue purchased from a butcher under another woman's face and leaves it on a counter (we see a close-up of it twice). In one scene taking place on a farm where a man was supposedly murdered, men yell at each other, one group of men briefly throws rocks or some other objects at another group of men, and one man either has dirt or blood on his shirt. A pregnant woman in labor moans and holds her stomach. Twice, a woman tells a girl she's going to be bitten by a snake (one time is playful, the other time is more menacing). Some yelling.

LANGUAGE 1 - A mild obscenity.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Post-colonized India, racism, classism, culture clashes, Anglo-Indians, feeling superior to others, trying to fit in, infidelity, breastfeeding, wet nurses, servants, dysfunctional families and marriages, jealousy.

MESSAGE - Some groups simply will not accept you. Be proud of who you are instead of trying to become someone else. Racism is pointless and destructive.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
