The Closet | 2001 | R | - 6.3.5

French film about a forty-something, lonely accountant (Daniel Auteuil) who becomes suicidal when he finds out that he is about to lose his job. Things change when his psychologist neighbor convinces him to save his job by coming out to his employers as a gay man -- even though he isn't. Also with Gérard Depardieu, Thierry Lhermitte, Michèle Laroque, Michel Aumont, Jean Rochefort and Alexandra Vandernoot. In French with English subtitles. [1:24]

SEX/NUDITY 6 - A woman kisses a man passionately and takes off his jacket; the couple is then shown having sex on an assembly line belt with the man thrusting (his buttocks are exposed), the woman's legs bobbing and we hear their loud moaning. This scene is also watched by a group of businessmen touring the manufacturing plant. We see a photograph several times showing two men in a gay bar; one man is in bottomless leather pants (exposing his buttocks) and the other man has his hand on the first man's buttock. Two men are shown in a restroom using urinals; we hear them urinating but see nothing. A man makes a sexual gesture thrusting his hips. There are two discussions (with sexual implications) of men taking showers together, a woman talks about a man having been seen half-naked in a park, there are two discussions accusing a man of being a pedophile, a man accuses a woman of sexual harassment, and there are several discussions about a man being gay. A woman, attempting to see a tattoo on a man's arm, unbuttons his shirt while he is asleep: another man walks in as she exposes the man's chest and assumes something sexual is happening. We see a man wearing a large pink condom on his head a couple of times; one time he is on a parade float surrounded by condom shaped balloons. We see a few women in tops that reveal some cleavage. A man asks another man to live with him now that his wife has left him. Two men hold hands; we see it as two men supporting each other, but characters in the film see it as an act of homosexuality.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man is beaten by two thugs for being gay; we only see the resulting bruises. A man jumps on a seated man knocking him out of his chair and onto the floor. A man contemplates killing himself by jumping out of a window. We hear numerous news reports on a TV of disasters that left no survivors. A woman yells at her son.

LANGUAGE 5 - 14 scatological terms, 14 anatomical terms, 1 anatomical term, 6 mild obscenities, 7 derogatory references to homosexuals, 3 derogatory references to African-French people, name-calling.

SUBSTANCE USE - A man and his teen son smoke a joint together.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Being something you are not, homosexuality, discrimination and reverse discrimination, gay bashing, avoiding controversy, company downsizing, being fired, divorce, suicide, feeling insignificant, condoms.

MESSAGE - Pretending to be something you are not can allow you to be who you really are.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
