Chicken Run | 2000 | G | - 1.4.1

The inmates of a small British chicken farm are anxious to find a way out before they become the ingredients of chicken pies. The film follows their leader Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha) and Rocky the Rooster (voiced by Mel Gibson) as they lead their fellow chickens to freedom from the clutches and the hatchet of Mrs. Tweedy (voiced by Miranda Richardson). This is the first full-length feature from clay-animator Nick Park, creator of the Wallace and Gromit shorts. Also with the voices of Jane Horrocks, Timothy Spall, Lynn Ferguson, Benjamin Whitrow, Tony Haygarth and Phil Daniels. [1:35]

SEX/NUDITY 1 - Some flirting and hand-touching among poultry, and remarks from a rooster about "chicks." Several chickens want a rooster to share their bed. A beak-to-beak kiss between a chicken and a rooster.

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A couple of very mean-looking dogs track a chicken who's trying to escape from a coup; they are growling and snarling and we see them in a couple of scenes. A rooster crashes into a feed trough resulting in a sprained wing; he wears a sling for part of the movie. A turnip explodes when it hits a wall illustrating what might happen to a chicken. A chicken knits a noose. A chicken crashes into a fence and is flung back landing on two mice. A very loud and scary-looking chicken-pie machine is brought to the farm. A chicken is strapped onto the machine, and falls down a huge chute toward some whirring blades; a chicken and rooster approach a huge roller which is shown squishing dough, and they are nearly cut by a pie crust cutter. Eventually they are nearly trapped in a flaming oven. The rooster falls into several pie crusts filled with presumably hot gravy and is slapped hard with a sticker. A woman is sprayed with a stream of gravy. Some shoving leads to a pile-on fight among chickens. A rooster knocks a chicken in the head with a stick and a bunk bed falls on a chicken. A chicken slaps a rooster's face. A chicken is taken to a shed to be killed and we hear the "thud" of the falling hatchet; we don't see anything but the other chickens look very frightened. There's also talk of killing chickens to make money. A very threatening-looking, angry woman is present throughout the movie. She insults, and kicks a man in the bottom. She also swings a hatchet at a chicken. The hatchet is knocked out of her hand and lands nearly hitting the woman's head. In hatchet-swinging instance we get the impression that the chicken lost her head but we soon realize that she's fine (she does look beheaded for a long moment). A woman hangs from a rope dangling from a flying plane. She is pelted in the face with raw eggs. A woman falls from a plane and lands in machinery which promptly explodes and leaves her blackened. A wall of a building collapses onto a woman. Chickens are propelled in the air by various means, often landing roughly. A man is attacked, bound and gagged by chickens. A rooster lands onto a woman with his tricycle.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
