During WWII, an ordinary woman (Cate Blanchett) agrees to help the British war effort by becoming an undercover courier in Southern France. She also hopes to find her lover, an RAF pilot who was shot down but may be alive and sheltered by the French Resistance. Two young boys hiding in an attic are found by soldiers and taken away. Two young boys and a man are loaded onto train cars that are packed with people (presumably headed for work or concentration camps). An elderly woman is hit in the face with a rifle butt. There are a few scenes of combat training, with people running through obstacle courses and practicing with guns. A woman parachutes from a plane and lands in a field almost on top of two young boys who run away in fear. A woman hits a man on the head with a hairbrush. There are discussions of a pilot's plane having gone down and we see photos of a charred dead body lying in a tree. A woman is arrested and we hear later that she was killed. Two young boys look through their house for their parents but cannot find them; we hear that their parents were taken away by the gendarmerie and sent to Poland because they were Jewish. A woman yells at a boy. A man urinates on a stairwell and we see the stream and hear the trickle. A man has scars on his hand.
