"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Brokedown Palace | 1999 | PG-13 | - 3.3.5

Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale are wrongfully arrested and jailed for allegedly smuggling drugs while vacationing in Bangkok. Also with Bill Pullman, Daniel Lapaine, Jacqui Kim, Lou Diamond Phillips, Amanda De Cadenet and Paul Walker. [1:40 )

SEX/NUDITY 3 - A little sexual innuendo and a few kisses (one is passionate). It's implied that a girl spends the night with a man and that they have had intercourse (we don't see anything happen). We see a couple of bare backsides of people showering, girls in midriff-revealing shirts, girls in bathing suits and a woman wearing a short nightshirt.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A girl is hit and falls to the ground, a girl's palms are hit several times with a stick and a girl bumps into another. We briefly see men kickboxing in a professional match. Police hold girls at gunpoint. A girl falls down; we later learn a cockroach crawled in her ear and caused an infection. We see cockroaches in some rooms and briefly see some fish heads fall out of a mat being unrolled. We see a girl squat and then hear her urinate.

LANGUAGE 5 - One F-word, an anatomical reference, many scatological references, several mild obscenities, a couple of insults and an obscene finger gesture.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Thailand's legal system, drug smuggling, drug use, wrongful imprisonment, teen drinking, bribery, friendship.

MESSAGE - The Thailand legal system is too harsh and seems to assume defendants are guilty until proven innocent; self-sacrifice is the ultimate show of friendship.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
