"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Big Fat Liar | 2002 | PG | - 2.3.3

A 14-year-old boy (Frankie Muniz) whose pastime seems to be lying to everybody about everything, learns that lying has repercussions. When he loses a crucial school paper and an unscrupulous Hollywood producer (Paul Giamatti) turns it into a hit movie, the boy must go to extraordinary lengths to regain the trust of his parents by proving that, this one time, he was not lying. With Amanda Bynes, Amanda Detmer, Lindsay Tryctha, Donald Adeosun Faison, Josh Rusin and Lee Majors. [1:28]

SEX/NUDITY 2 - A man and woman kiss briefly and hug. A woman getting a massage is covered by a towel from the waist down, but we see her bare back. Women in evening gowns reveal some cleavage, and a girl is shown wearing tight, short tops which show her bare midriff. On a movie set, a group of women wear what looks like painted-on costumes, which accentuate their bodies. A man swims a couple of times and we see his bare chest, and a man in tight fitting swim trunks struts and dances around his pool.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man jumps out of a speeding car and rolls on the ground, and two men with one parachute jump out of a disabled helicopter. A boy rides his bike into the side of a limousine and falls on the ground. A boy skateboards down a sidewalk and an older boy steps in front of him knocking him off the board and onto the ground. A man is knocked down by a torrent of water and is pinned against a wooden sign. A stunt man crashes through a window, falls several floors, lands on a large, inflated bag, and a boy jumps from a roof and lands on a large, inflated bag. A man drops a lighted match on pieces of paper, which catch on fire; a boy tries to stomp them out with his shoe and the man then pours alcohol on them causing them to burst into flames. A man chases a boy through streets, through a martial arts movie set where two men are fighting with sticks, up stairs in a building, and onto a roof where he tackles him by grabbing his feet. A man swerves while driving and nearly hits another car, and a man drives fast and recklessly fishtailing a couple of times. A boy is grabbed by the collar and threatened by a bully who's after his skateboard. A boy, and then a group of children, jump on and tackle a man. A boy kicks a man in the groin, and a boy jumps from a second floor stairway onto a man, sending both of them crashing to the floor. A woman hits a man's car from behind pushing it into a truck; the driver of the truck threatens to kill him and then drives his truck over the man's car, crushing it. To create a diversion, a girl tells a woman that her car is parked on a dog. A girl talks to a group of people describing the kind of damage she hopes to inflict on a man. A boy describes how his father supposedly choked on a meatball. There is a lot of yelling and a man dishes out one cruel insult after another. Also a man blows a raspberry and growls at a boy. There are some pranks pulled on a man: his pool water is filled with blue dye which turns his skin blue, and his shampoo contains orange dye which turns his hair orange (he screams when he sees himself in a mirror); his car is rigged so that nothing works the way it's supposed to, and his earphone is slathered with superglue and it sticks to his ear -- he tries to pull it off while driving and slams his head into the window and later he yanks hard on it and it comes loose but he winces. There are some gross-out references: A boy says another boy was "flicking buggers at the back of my neck," a girl talks about her grandmother having "toe fungus," and there's some scatological humor.

LANGUAGE 3 - 1 scatological term, 2 sexual references, 4 anatomical terms, 6 mild obscenities, 6 religious exclamations and some insults.

SUBSTANCE USE - A man is shown smoking a cigar. People are shown drinking alcohol at a party. There are some quite brazen ad placements.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Lying, loss of trust, plagiarism, greed, giving up, bullies, celebrity, stealing.

MESSAGE - The truth is not overrated.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
