"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

The Beach | 2000 | R | - 6.8.10

Based on Alex Garland's novel, it tells the story of a young traveler in Bangkok (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is given a map leading to a mythical paradise island and journeys there with a French couple. Also with Tilda Swinton, Virginie Ledoyen, Guillaume Canet, Robert Carlyle, Staffan Kihlbom, Magnus Lindgren, Victoria Smurfit, Lars Arentz-Hansen, Daniel Caltagirone, Peter Gevisser, Jukka Hiltunen, Simone Huber, Paterson Joseph, Saskia Mulder, Jerry Swindall, Zelda Tinska, Peter Youngblood Hills and Lidia Zovkic. [1:58]

SEX/NUDITY 6 - Some sexual innuendo and several kisses, sometimes passionate. We see a man and woman having intercourse with movement and moaning (sheets are hung around the bed so we don't see any nudity, only shapes of bodies); we later see them obviously nude but covered with sheets as they lie in bed apart from each other. We hear people moaning loudly during intercourse (but we don't see them). We briefly see a woman's bare breasts as she takes off her shirt and kisses a man passionately (he also removes his shirt); it's implied that they then have intercourse. We see a man wearing a towel around his waist, men and women in tiny swim suits, several shirtless men and several women wearing midriff-revealing shirts.

VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Some people are shot several times and killed; we see blood spray (some sprays onto a nearby witness's face) and blood on their clothing as they fall to the ground. We see two extremely bloody people who have been bitten by sharks: we see somewhat close-up shots of a man's gruesomely mauled leg and another's mauled torso (blood pools around them, a large trail of blood runs across the beach and we also see lots of blood in the water). We see a blood-soaked bed, bloody walls and a bloody corpse lying on the floor next to a bloody knife (this scene is shown a few times throughout the movie). A man covers another's mouth and nose; we see him struggle to breathe, then finally die. In a dream, a man shoots people (they fall to the ground without visible bloody wounds). A man is held down by several people and one of his infected teeth is pulled out (we hear him yelling and also hear a ripping noise); we briefly see the bloody tooth at a distance. A man about to be attacked by a shark slices its belly (we see lots of blood in the water) and kills it. A man is hit in the head with the butt of a gun and another is knocked out (we later see the side of his bloody face). A man grabs another's genitals and threatens him; also, a man grabs a woman and pins her to the ground. We hear sizzling sounds as three people's arms are branded. A man kicks a door, trying to break it down. We hear a man screaming in pain and see his swollen, infected leg. A man falls into a hole in the ground and screams in pain. Some shoving and a couple of slaps. A couple of times we see men with machine guns standing guard and there's some threatening with guns; in one scene, men fire shots into the air. A corpse lying in a grave is covered with sand. A man vomits, another drinks snake blood and another eats a caterpillar. A jump scene in which a man grabs another.

LANGUAGE 10 - About 50 F-words, several anatomical references, many scatological references, several mild obscenities and some mild obscenities.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Traveling abroad, Thailand, utopia, secret communities, shunning civilization, suicide, lying, marijuana use.

MESSAGE - There's no such thing as a paradise; some people will do anything to preserve and protect their way of life.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
