"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Backstage | 2000 | R | - 8.2.10

Documentary showing onstage performances and a behind-the-scenes view of the 1999 Hard Knock Life tour featuring Hip Hop artists Jay-Z, DMX, Method Man, Redman, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Ja Rule, DJ Clue and Amil. [1:39]

SEX/NUDITY 8 - Several instances of sexual innuendo; also, there's a reference to pubic hair, and a man refers to his genitals talking (the camera focuses on his clothed crotch briefly). A man and woman walk into a bathroom stall and she kneels in front of him; the scene ends, but it's implied she performs fellatio. A clothed woman straddles a clothed man and gyrates on his lap; when he lifts up her top and her bare breasts are revealed, she pulls her shirt back down and leaves. We see full frontal female nudity when two women lift up their dresses in front of a group of men (a couple of men grab at their bodies). A woman lifts up her shirt and shows her bare breasts to a man who grabs one of them. A woman moves her skirt to show men a tattoo on her upper thigh and lower stomach (this is seen in close-up; her panties are visible, and we see a man's hand grabbing her thigh). We see the bottom of a woman's breasts while she pulls down her top, part of a man's bare buttocks after a group of people pulled his pants down (see Violence/Gore), several shirtless men, a scantily clad female animated character, and a couple of women in cleavage-revealing tops. Panties are thrown at a man performing on stage; in a later scene we see a woman holding a pair of panties and saying that she threw a pair at a singer.

VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - Men scuffle a couple of times, a man punches another's stomach, a few men push each other on the step of a bus and fall out of the door (some fall to the ground, but none appears to be hurt), a large group of people playfully wrestles (it turns out they're trying to pull down a man's pants; see Sex/Nudity for more details), and a man yells at another for awhile. We briefly see people playing paintball in a paintball arena; the scene cuts to an animated character being hit with a couple of red paintballs, which splatter on the character's chest. A man has slightly bloody hands (presumably from scuffling with others). A man picks his nose.

LANGUAGE 10 - At least 150 F-words, lots of anatomical references, lots and lots of scatological references, a few mild obscenities, a religious obscenity, many insults, lots and lots of racial epithets, and several obscene finger gestures.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Hip Hop, music tours, rappers, "groupies," fans, rivalry, marijuana use (in several scenes we see people either smoking or rolling joints; in one scene, we see two men holding large plastic bags filled with marijuana).

MESSAGE - Being part of a music tour isn't fun all the time, just most of the time. Music stars in the spotlight can be both thoughtful and immature.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
